The Youngest Chess Grandmaster in History!
Abhi Mishra earned the Grandmaster (GM) title at age 12 years, 4 months, and 25 days old.
On June 30, 2021, Abhi defeated GM Leon Luke Mendonca at the Vezerkepzo GM Mix Tournament in Budapest, Hungary to earn the final “norm” on his long path to the Grandmaster title.
Sergey Karjakin’s record for the youngest Grandmaster (GM) in the history of chess had stood unbroken for 19 years–since 2002!
Russia’s Sergey Karjakin was born January 12, 1990, and he set the record when he was 12 years and 7 months old.
Mishra beat Karjakin’s record by 66 days.
How to Earn the Grandmaster Title?
To earn the GM title, a player must reach a rating of at least 2500 and pick up three “norms” along the way.
To earn a “norm,” a player must compete against at least two players from national federations other than his own country and 50 percent of opponents must be titled players with a minimum rating of 2380.

The Youngest Player to Beat a Reigning Champion!
In September 2025, 16-year-old USA Grandmaster Abhi Mishra defeated reigning World Chess Champion D. Gukesh in the 2025 FIDE Grand Swiss tournament, making him the youngest player ever to beat a reigning World Chess Champion in a Classical chess game.

At 10 years old, Abhimanyu Mishra had openly declared his short-term goal was to break Sergey Karjakin’s world youngest Grandmaster record!
Abhi kept in mind that he became an International Master at 10 years, 9 months and 3 days, whereas Sergey Karjakin did not become an International Master until he was age 11 years and 11 months.
Abhi’s long-term goal is to become the World Chess Champion one day.
