Chapter 13 Zugzwang/Stalemate – INTRODUCTION

Zugzwang means being required to move, especially when you do not want to move–often meaning you must make a losing move. Zugzwang can result in a victory or the capture of an enemy piece.

Stalemate is a position where one player must move, but cannot make a legal move. Stalemate ends the game and is always a draw–neither player wins. Diagram 373 shows black about to be placed in Zugzwang by white, with a white checkmate to follow quickly.
